With Justine Henin's stunning retirement announcement yesterday still settling into tennis minds around the world, Maria Sharapova is set to move into the world no. 1 spot on Monday.
Top-ranked status is nothing new to the statuesque Russian, though: she held the no. 1 ranking four separate times for a total of 14 weeks. Maybe that's why Sharapova seemed so indifferent about the move:
The ranking has never been a big deal for me. Whether I'm No. 1 or 5, my main goal is just to keep winning tennis matches and the ranking will take care of itself if I keep winning.
...says the 21-year old millionairess. I love when athletes give these generic media talking points - as if they never dreamed of being the best player in the world when they were an a 8-year-old girl traveling from Siberia to the United States to make a tennis career.
What's that song? Oh yes - "Money Changes Everything". Got it!
